history & Why was it built? The history behind the Great Wall of China was that the Qin dynasty decided to connect the wall because a longer wall provides better protection than individual walls. Most of the wall we see today was finished by the Ming dynasty although it was started by Qin. It was originally made out of brick and dirt but the material was later changed to stone. Construction was finished in 1911, 3 years before World War One.
The Great Wall was built to keep out Nomadic, Mongolians and Barbarians. Barbarian is defined by the dictionary as: a member not belonging to one of the great civilisation (Greek, Roman, Christian). Many Chinese emperors tried to build a wall and many emperors failed. The failure was because of lack of building materials and getting taken over stopped the building process. |
